Abstract Aims
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing, and combined with longer life expectancies, years lived with disabilities (YLD) due to T2D is also expected to increase. We aimed to examine how YLD can be used to evaluate health promotion and primary prevention and analyze which interventions have influenced YLD due to T2D in Denmark.
Subject and methods
The trend of YLD due to T2D was analyzed using Joinpoint regression. A qualitative analysis of health promotion and primary prevention was combined with the analysis.
Results
Between 1990 and 2019 YLD due to T2D increased significantly. National action plans for T2D prioritize early detection and tertiary prevention rather than primary prevention. Owing to decentralized health promotion and primary prevention, there is a lack of data on implemented interventions nationally. Of the main risk factors, only tobacco has seen extensive national prevention interventions implemented.
